Cambridge Community Television has posted video from its terrific May 4th event, “Filling the News Gap in Cambridge and Beyond.” The event included a panel entitled “Newsgathering and the Law: Hot Topics for Citizen Journalists in Massachusetts,” which featured the Clinic’s own Christopher Bavitz alongside Jeff Hermes and Andy Sellars of the Digital Media Law Project. Jeff, Andy, and Chris were joined by Joe Bergantino of Boston University‘s New England Center for Investigative Reporting for a conversation about Massachusetts law governing newsgathering. The event coincided with the Clinic’s and DMLP’s publication of their legal guide, “Newsgathering in Massachusetts.”
It’s well worth checking out all the sessions from the event, including a keynote address by Josh Stearns of Free Press, a session on citizen journalists as “experimental storytellers” (featuring Nieman-Berkman Fellow Laura Amico of Homicide Watch and moderated by Denise Cheng and Becky Hurwitz of MIT‘s Center for Civic Media), and a panel moderated by Dan Kennedy called “Covering Chaos” (about news coverage of the manhunt that followed April’s Boston Marathon bombing).
The Clinic is happy to have played a role in putting on this outstanding event, and we again wish CCTV a happy 25th anniversary!
